Task shifting for scale-up of HIV care: evaluation of nurse-centered antiretroviral treatment at rural health centers in Rwanda.
Shumbusho et al, 2009
This study by Shumbusho et al. investigated feasibility of task-shifting (from doctors to nurses) of anti-retroviral therapy (ART) prescriptions for HIV in Rwanda. The study suggests that nurses are able to prescribe ART safely and effectively in a rural sub-Saharan setting, given sufficient training, mentoring, and support. Nurse-led prescribing of ART could mean that timely, appropriate treatment reaches many more HIV patients.
