Interested to hear more from such an inspiring individual? Watch this 2-minute video published by Icahn School of Medicine back in 2013, in which Dr Chikwe shares what initially attracted her to heart surgery.

"Joanna Chikwe is a heart surgeon and a physician-scientist using big data to tackle questions unanswered by clinical trials. She is the incoming George Schaefer Distinguished Professor of Surgery and founding chair of the Department of Cardiac Surgery at the Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Her clinical and research goals are enhancing access, care, and experience for cardiac surgery patients; she also leads data analytics collaborations exploring health care disparities, surgical technology, and team performance. Specializing in advanced, less invasive heart-valve repair, Chikwe was previously the Cheng Endowed Professor of Surgery at State University of New York and professor of cardiovascular surgery at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai New York."
