In Conversation With Dr Fatu Forna

Beryl Sawyer, lead for International Women Day is joined by Dr Fatu Forna to discuss her career as a gynaecologist, her fondation and so much more.

 

Dr. Fatu Forna is an Obstetrician-Gynecologist, Epidemiologist and International Maternal and Child Health Expert with solid leadership and public health experience. She is also a writer and philanthropist, and lives in Atlanta, Georgia with her husband and four children. She received her medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine and completed her Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at Emory University School of Medicine. She is a Fellow of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.


Dr. Forna has a strong track record leading and managing clinical and technical teams and developing innovative programs to improve the health of women, children, and families. She has experience working at national and international level in clinical management, policy formulation, program design, quality improvement, capacity building, and monitoring and evaluation. Dr. Forna has over 20 years’ experience in clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology, Epidemiology, clinical leadership, research, teaching, and non-profit management.


Dr. Forna is currently an Operational Lead in the Department of Women’s Services at Kaiser Permanente in Georgia, working to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality and to improve the quality of care provided to women. She has served as Lead for Reproductive and Maternal Health for the World Health Organization in Sierra Leone, as Chief of Women's Services for Kaiser Permanente in Georgia, and as a Medical Epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She has worked in many countries around the world and is an international expert on maternal mortality reduction and other reproductive and maternal health issues. Dr. Forna is a passionate advocate for the reproductive health of young women, and the author of the book "From your doctor to you. What every teenage girl should know about her body, sex, STDs and contraception". She is the creator of the From Your Doctor to You: Puberty Party, Womanhood Party and Manhood Party to give young women and men the tools they need to protect their sexual and reproductive health. Dr. Forna is also the author of the bestselling Puppy Princess Sheba children's book series.


Dr. Forna is Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director of the non-profit Mama-Pikin Foundation, which works to improve the health of women, children, and families in Sierra Leone, West Africa. She is an engaging and sought-after speaker and has been featured on CNN International for her work improving the health of women and children around the world.
