Research in Global Neurosurgery

For the second half of June we will be posting on global neurosurgery. To kick things off we have two research papers. We hope you find these interesting, and we look forward to our first interview later today with Dr Finn, an ST6 in neurosurgery in Oxford.

 

Trial of Decompressive Craniectomy for Traumatic Intracranial Hypertension

Hutchinson PJ, et al, 2016


This was an international, muti-center, parallel-group, superiority, randomised trial. It found that decompressive craniectomy in patients with traumatic brain injury and refractory intracranial hypertension resulted in lower mortality and higher rates of severe disability at 6 months compared to medical care.
